The Marie stopes Nigeria (MSN) subsidiary of Marie Stopes International (MSI) has been playing a major role towards maternal mortality reduction effort in Nigeria. This it has carried out through active collaboration with government, health institutions and non- governmental organisations, to train health care professionals - Doctors and Nurses under its Blue-Star Network on maternal mortality reduction interventions - long lasting contraceptive methods and post abortion care services. Three separate trainings have been conducted, two at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi.The first training which was on the use of long lasting contraceptive methods (IUCD & JADELL) carried out at the family planning clinic lecture room of UNTH Enugu, involved a batch of 25 Doctors and Nurse/Midwives drawn from private health facilities in Anambra and Ebonyi States. A total of 25 health professionals participated in the training workshop, which was facilitated by skilled resource persons from South-east PAC-Net - Professor Brian Adinma and Dr. Oguanuo. The six day training was expensive and included lectures, video clips and practical sessions carried out on models as well as on life patients. Practical sessions were also conducted at out-reach health facilities - Health Centre Awgu, health centre at Military Barracks Gariki in Awkunanaw and police college health centre at Oji River.At the end of the training workshops, the participants were given seed commodities of IUCD and Implant together with a log book. In built into the workshop was follow-up monitoring and mentoring of the participants at their various services delivery points, following which appropriate certification would be made if a requisite number of insertions have been carried out satisfactorily.The other two trainings conducted under the collaborative partnership of Marie Stopes Nigeria, SE-PAC-Net and the training institutions at UNTH AND NAUTH was a back to back training on Women Centred Post Abortion Care, each lasting four days, conducted for doctors and nurses under the MSN Blue Star Network.A total of 21 doctors and Nurses mainly private health facilities Enugu State were trained at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi, while 25 drawn from private health facilities from Anambra State were similarly trained at UNTH Enugu.
